Ko Wai Mātou? About Us
Te Kupenga Net Trust (TKNT) was established in 1995 as a mainstream service provider to deliver peer support and advocacy services to whaiora and their whanau experiencing mental illness and addictions in the Tairawhiti region. “Historically at the conception of TKNT, people wanted and needed this clinical free place because lives had been affected by medical treatments in the past such as being locked in institutions, treated with electro-convulsive therapy compulsorily treated, diagnosed wrongly and given medication that didn’t work” – Te Kupenga Manager 2015.
In 2012, TKNT identified a need to revisit governance, operational and delivery systems and processes following a period of management and governance turnover. The period of change contributed to a degree of internal uncertainty thereby impacting on staff morale, external perceptions of TKNT capability, service delivery and contracting relationships. At this time, TKNT provided governance support to build-capability during a time of change. During this period TKNT also employed a new manager who assessed, led and embedded a programme of change required to ensure that TKNT stays viable and relevant to the needs of whaiora and their whanau.
In 2016, TKNT formally transitioned from a mainstream service provider to a Tikanga Maori service provider to more appropriately reflect the service model of delivery offered by TKNT Board, management, staff and whanau of TKNT services. This has been an iterative and organic process in response to the significant uptake of TKNT services from whanau. It was reported that 98% of TKNT services up-taking identify as Maori.
